This sketch illustrates the position known as theistic evolution. This is the position of Francis Collins, the well known scientist who led the Human Genome project to completion and was recently appointed by President Obama as the new director of the National Institutes of Health. I have a great deal of respect for Dr. Collins’ work and a personal appreciation for him as a father of twin boys who have a genetic disorder. I appreciate the fact that Collins, as a committed Christian, has held some of the most influential scientific positions in the nation. I do, however, disagree with his attempt to force macro evolution into biblical narrative. Not only is this very unnatural to the text of the Bible, it also undermines the theological foundations of creation, fall and redemption. It just doesn’t fit.
To the left of Collins, Charles Darwin is represented by his book title shortened to “Origins.” On the right is Moses, looking very similar to Darwin, represented by “Genesis.” Moses of course is the author of the first five books of the Bible. I have a hot beverage sitting as though it is Moses’ drink of choice. Darwin has an iced drink. The two drinks, on both sides of Collins, illustrate that theistic evolution is a lukewarm position, also indicated in the title “A Compromising Position.”
