“Purpose Driven Nihilism” is a play on the title of Rick Warren’s book, The Purpose Driven Life. Nihilism is the philosophy that there is no objective basis for meaning or purpose in life. I wanted to illustrate how even a naturalist is driven towards a need for meaning, significance, purpose.
The four books displayed on the table are to illustrate that the man in the sweatshirt which reads “looking for meaning” is not going to find purpose in his particular worldview. Seeing this sort of scene played out on a regular basis makes me think of Peter’s response to Christ, “Where else would we go – you alone have the words of eternal life.”
