The Hero Born of Woman
The Battle Hymn of the Republic first appeared in The Atlantic Monthly in 1862 and quickly gained popularity during the time of the Civil War. Here is a line that I absolutely love from this hymn written by Julia Ward Howe.
“I have read a fiery gospel writ in burnished rows of steel: ‘As ye deal with my condemners, so with you my grace shall deal; Let the Hero, born of woman, crush the serpent with His heel, Since God is marching on.'”
