Africa Needs Christianity, Says Atheist

“As an atheist, I truly believe Africa needs God”

The preceding line is the title of the 2008 “The Times” article by atheist journalist Matthew Parris. He argues that Christianity has a demonstrably positive influence on African culture.  “Removing Christian evangelism from the African equation,” Parris states, “may leave the continent at the mercy of a malign fusion of Nike, the witch doctor, the mobile phone and the machete.”

I first heard of the article when listening to a debate between Christopher Hitchens, who argued that religion poisens everything, and John Lennox who argued for the veracity of the Christian faith. You can watch the debate here. You can read the entire article as a pdf file here on the Navigators website.
